Using early versions of MacVector on OS X
Do versions of MacVector earlier than 7.1 run on OS X?
Versions of MacVector prior to 7.1 will not run on OS X if the copy protection device drivers are not enabled.
MacVector 7.1 was completely rewritten to run in the native environment on OS X, as well as on OS 8.6 and any version of OS 9.
Any MacVector installation that uses the older ADB Eve 2 copy protection device will fail on OS X because OS X does not support the EvE INIT required by the ADB device. Moreover, Apple has dropped support for the ADB specification and new Macs no longer have ADB ports.
Support for the USB Eve 3 copy protection device was added in MacVector 6.5.3. MacVector 6.5.3 and 7.0 may run in the classic environment on OS X under the following conditions:
1. The USB Sentinel system extension necessary for the USB key is installed on the OS 9 System Extensions folder. If the USB Sentinel driver is not present, it can be installed using the MacVector installer by performing a Custom Install and selecting the USB Sentinel System extension at the bottom of the installation list.
2. The classic environment must be set to use the Extensions Manager. By default, the Extensions Manager is not used in the classic environment on OS X. To make the Extensions Manager active so the USB Sentinel extension can be used, open the OS X System Preferences, select the Classic icon, click on the Advanced tab, and specify Open Extensions Manager in the Startup options field.
Network installations of MacVector 6.5.3 and 7.0 will run in the classic environment on OS X because they don't require a hardware copy protection device and it's extension. MacVector network installations use KeyAccess to communicate with KeyServer. An installer for the OS X-compatible version of KeyAccess (KSClient.sea) is available at the following web site:

Please be aware that your ability to perform NCBI BLAST and Entrez searches with MacVector 6.5.3 and 7.0 is near an end. The NCBI has announced that the servers used by earlier versions of MacVector will be retired in July, 2003. At the end of 2003, the old Entrez service was retired. The NCBI Entrez and BLAST servers have been replaced by newer systems that require MacVector 7.2 or greater. Therefore, you consider upgrading your MacVector license to the current version which includes a new version of the NCBI Toolkit which allows it to communicate with the newer servers at NCBI. The upgrade is approximately $500, depending on which version of MacVector you have licensed.
