Unable to download certain NCBI sequences
Macvector 7.1 cannot download certain sequences from the NCBI servers.
The sequences may have been previously OK to download. An example is AE003542 of the Drosophila genome.
This is due to changes that the NCBI made to the sequence format in July, 2002.
This problem is due to the way the NCBI added some extra elements to their ASN.1 specification.
According to the NCBI:
"These are caused by new elements that were added to the ASN.1 specification. Gene-ref.locus-tag was added last June, and Person-id.consortium was added last July. These changes were needed to accommodate new fields made legal in GenBank format by the international collaborators. Applications need to be recompiled and relinked with the ASN.1 data in current toolkit in order to be able to read these records."
The next release of MacVector, version 7.2, was a free upgrade from MacVector 7.1 and included a newer version of the NCBI Toolkit that allows sequences with the new tags to be handled properly. All subsequent releases of MacVector use a more recent version of the NCBI toolkit and should not exhibit this problem.
