USB dongle is not recognized on OS 9 system

Why is my USB dongle not recognized on OS 9?

A static MacVector installation may fail to open if the USB dongle is not recognized. When this happens a message is displayed stating:

If you are using an Eve hardware key (a 'dongle'):

An EvE hardware key has not been detected. The appropriate system extension (EvE or USBSentinel) may need to be installed in the Extensions folder. [-999]

USB keys may fail to be recognized for several reasons.

MacVector may be unable to detect your USB key in any of the following situations:

1. The USB Sentinel extension is not installed. A system extension is required to allow your system to use the USB key. To determine if the USB Sentinel extension is present on your system, open the Finder on your Mac and search for "USBSentinel"; it should be present in the Extensions subfolder in your OS 9 System folder. If the USB Sentinel extension is not present, then a new one can be installed from the MacVector program CD by performing a "Custom" installation (rather than "Easy" installation) and selecting "USB Sentinel System extension" at the bottom of the list.

2. The USB Sentinel extension is present but is inactive. To determine whether the USB Sentinel extension on your OS 9 system is active, click on the Apple Menu, open the Control Panels, then select Extensions Manager. When the Extensions Manager opens, scroll to the Extensions part, look for "USBSentinel", and see whether there is a check in the box preceding "USBSentinel". If the box is empty, then click on it once to activate the extension and reboot your system.

3. The USB Sentinel extension is active but the key is not recognized. In this case, check the following:

a. Are you using an adapter? If so, it may need a driver to recognize the MacVector USB key. Please ensure that the appropriate adapter driver has been installed. If you're using the iMate adapter, the corresponding driver can be downloaded from the following web site:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/imate/imate_driver.html

b. Is your key plugged into a USB hub? The key may not be detected if it has been plugged into a USB hub. If you are using a USB hub, try plugging the key directly into a port on your machine.

c. Try reseating the key or plugging it into a different port. If you have access to another Mac or another MacVector USB key, then try exchanging keys to determine whether the problem tracks with the key.

4. The USB key has been damaged or is defective. USB keys are programmed and therefore sensitive to static discharge. If your key is frequently swapped between machines, this could increase the possibility of damage. If the problem tracks with your key, then it's likely that it has been damaged and needs to be replaced. In this case, contact us or email support@macvector.com, and request a key exchange. We'll need your name, phone number, shipping address, MacVector license number, and the serial number on the USB key. After receiving the new key, you'll need to return the old one to us.
