Problem using enzyme and subsequence selections

With certain versions of MacVector prior to version 9.0, you may see propblems performing searches using "selected enzymes" or "selected subsequences". This problem occurs only on OS X systems where MacVector has been installed by one user (usually an administrator account) and used by one or more users who log into a different account. It can be resolved by changing the access permissions on the relevant MacVector data files. Two approaches are available for making these changes:

1. Login to an administrator account on your mac

2. Find the relevant subsequence or enzyme data file in the Subsequences or Restriction Enzymes folder within the MacVector folder, select the first data file, and do a "Get Info" (command-I) to bring up the "Info" dialog.

3. In the "Ownership and Permissions" tab, change the owner to yourself. You'll be prompted for your admin password.

4. Change all the access permissions, particularly "Others", to "Read & Write".

5. Repeat steps 2-4 for all the data files in the Restriction Enzymes folder and for all of the tfsites data files in the Subsequences folder.

The necessary changes can also be readily made by opening the Terminal application (in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder) and typing the following commands at the system prompt:

Messages about files in the NCBI Data folder can be ignored.

If the sudo command doesn't work, then you or the administrator can change the permissions by logging into the root (or admin) account and using the chmod command as follows (you'll need the root password):
