NCBI connection problem with MacVector 7.2

If a firewall is not the problem, then the ability to connect to the NCBI servers may depend on the particular network router or hub used at your site, as well as the specific internet route between your Mac and the NCBI. You can't directly control the route but one approach that has worked is to force MacVector to communicate with the NCBI servers in firewall mode.  This mode uses different IP addresses and ports than the standard mode of communication.   You'll need to use an ncbi.cnf file such as the following:

This text file looks like this:

***********************************

[NET_SERV]

SERV_CONN_MODE=SERVICE

[CONN]

FIREWALL=TRUE

***********************************

The ncbi.cnf file must be saved to your Users / <username> / Library / Preferences folder on OS X or to the System Preferences folder on OS 9.
